WHAT IS 3D PRINTING?

3D printing is a process of producing digitally designed 3D objects. Printing is done by way of applying consecutive layers in a particular shape one on top of one another. 3D printing may be used for household and professional purposes in such fields as architecture, fashion and design.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

3D rapid prototyping starts with creating a 3D model in CAD software – Blender, Google sketchup, 3D Studio etc. Then the design is uploaded onto the printers software in *.STL format and is turned into a G-code. The created code contains commands for the printer. The printer communicates with the computer via USB.

MATRIALS:

RapCraft 3D printer can print in ABS, PLA, Nylon or even wood-like composites like Laywood. Thermoplastic filament is heated to a high temperature and then applied in layers onto a glass print bed (the bed is heated or not depending on the material used).  Layer after layer the printer creates a shape of a 3D object. How fast the printer prints depends on how big and complicated the object is and on printing quality so creating a 3D object may take up from few minutes to few hours. Printing 3D objects is cheaper than printing with a classic 2D printer!

PLA (polylactic acid) – is a natural, biodegradable polymer obtained from corn or potato starch. Thanks to its low melting temperature it is a stable3D printing composite. It is also 100% eco friendly, lightweight, and strong at the same time.

Nylon – excellent quality of finish, great mechanical and chemical strength (better than ABS), remarkably resistant to foundry resins. Easily submits to machining. Thin-walled nylon objects are very elastic. Great for printing cavity pour moulds.

Laywood – blend of fibres collected from recycling wood and polymer binders can be melted and moulded just like other composites, it has the same characteristics as PLA.  A peculiar feature of this material is its ability to mould tree growth rings with subtle colour degradation from brown to beige, what comes out really pretty. The colour may be manipulated and changed at any time, by setting the temperature of the head to 180 ° C for a lighter colour and to 230° C for a darker shade.

DRIVERS AND SOFTWARE:

Software is completely free; it is based on an open source RepRap.org project. That way, the 3D printer is able to serve multiple purposes and lets you enjoy many open source innovations. First start up consists in installing drivers and a free Repetier-Host – a piece of software which communicates with the equipment. Software works with the following file types: *STL and *.OBJ. A specially prepared calibration files are automatically uploaded to Skeiforge and Slic3r ensuring fast and problem-free 3D printing.
